How much it cost to ship a package to Russia from the USA via Qwintry, FishisFast and Pochtoy parcel forwarders in 2015

I've stopped using Shipito parcel forwarder for shipping to Russia in late 2014. The first parcel forwarder I used to ship from the USA to Russia in 2015 was Qwintry. I tried to choose the Qwintry Air courier service, but it appeared to be more expensive for my package due to the dimensional weight. So after consolidating my package I switched to USPS Priority Mail Express International.
Qwintry package: Invoice

But later on I also tried Qwintry Air courier service as well as Qwintry Eco Post delivery by Russian post via Berlin.

Qwintry fee structure in 2015:
  • Shipping method: USPS Priority Mail Express International (EMS)
Package Location: Newark, Delaware (no sales tax location)
    Weight: 32.62 lb (14.8 kg)
Dimensional weight: 57.60 lb (26.13 kg)

    Mailout fee: $0
    Processing incoming packages: $0
Repacking fee: $0 (no packages consolidated)
    Packaging materials: $8
    Security tape: $3
    Postage: $197.15
    Insurance: $0 (optional)
Total per 1 kg of gross weight: $14.53
    TOTAL: $215.11
  • Shipping method: Qwintry Eco Post (Russian Post via Berlin)
Package Location: Newark, Delaware (no sales tax location)

    Banking fee: $3.65 (3.2% + $0.30)
Total per 1 kg of gross weight: $13.49
    TOTAL: $108.20
I also tested FishisFast parcel forwarder and its delivery method Fastbox Economy via Russian Post (via Berlin)

FishisFast fee structure in 2015:
  • Shipping method: Fastbox Economy via Russian Post
Package Location: New Castle, Delaware (no sales tax location)

And the latest test in 2015 was a parcel forwarder named Pochtoy and it's delivery method "Polar Express via BPost-EMS".

Boxberry - new courier shipping method from Shipito for shipping from USA to Russia

Shipito has finally offered a cheaper shipping method for customers from Russia. It is a courier service - Boxberry.
Boxberry - new courier shipping method from Shipito for shipping from USA to Russia
Boxberry offers very fast shipping 5-15 days, depending on your location in Russia. Damage + Delivery insurance is optional and available at extra cost.

Packages are picked up in the California warehouse of Shipito once a week, on Friday. Then they are delivered by air from Los Angeles (LAX airport) to Moscow (VKO airport), where Boxberry will take care of express customs clearance and delivery throughout Russia.

First pick up is on the 7th of November 2014. The shipping method is already available in the shipping calculator.

Boxberry shipping method is available in all Shipito warehouses. Packages from Tualatin, OR warehouse or Minden, NV warehouse will need additional 2-3 days to be transported to CA.

I have tried to compare prices and it appeared that Boxberry with insurance costs about the same as USPS Priority Mail International (EMS) without insurance. Note that Boxberry insurance is optional and quite pricey. I didn't have any problem to calculate the price for large 36x17x17 boxes that I used in the past. The only problem was that Boxberry doesn't allow the value of the goods to exceed $1000 USD.

Review of Mainbox - US to Russia package forwarder (parcel forwarder, mail forwarder, freight forwarder)

I have bought Dell XPS 2720 all-in-one computer at Dell Outlet USA. I used a 20% coupon code, although it is 87 dollars cheaper with the 25% $GDBTQH7WC6FMV right now . But I had not time to wait for a better deal. And I didn't expect any deals similar to Black Friday ones when a refurbished DELL XPS 2720 costed only 1'000 USD at Woot, which is 200 USD less than you can get from Dell outlet now using the 25% coupon code.

I wanted my computer to be delivered safe and fast, so I was not planning to use the state postal services (USPS and Russian Post). I have decided to test a pretty new package forwarder (parcel forwarder, freight forwarder, mail forwarder) - Mainbox International Inc. I chose Standard delivery instead of Express, because it is much cheaper, but still very fast (sometimes even faster than the Express shipping by Mainbox).

I've made my order at Dell Outlet on January 30th, 2014.

Fedex has delivered my package to the no sales tax location in Bear, Delaware on February 4th, 2014.

I've chosen the no sales tax warehouse of Mainbox, because it only costs $2 dollars more, but allows not to pay the sales tax at all! The saving of several dozens of dollars was decisive for me. With the sales tax there was a chance I could exceed the 1000 EUR limit. And I didn't want to pay any additional customs fees or taxes in Russia. Nor have I considered an opportunity to lower the price in the customs declaration. It is an ethical decision for me, not the risk of losing the insurance in case of any problem.

On February 5rh, 2014 I requested Mainbox to test my computer. I also added in the comments that I wanted them to check whether the IPS panel has any dead pixels or not. This test costed me only 3 USD. The refurbished computer was tested to work and the screen didn't have any dead pixels.

Then I sent my purchase to packaging. My newly purchased computer was packed and the box was measured. This was the time I knew my final cost of sending my package from the USA to Russia by Mainbox Standard delivery.

On February 6, 2014 I paid for all the services of Mainbox as well as for the courier shipping by Paypal. I could have saved 10% by using a debit or credit card of the Avangard bank. As for Paypal, it costed me 0% to fill in the account. The same applies to debit and credit cards, there are no any hidden fees at Mainbox!

The size of the package was 77x62x32cm and its weight was 19.12 kg . Dimensional weight was 22.5 kg. The first kg costed me 28 USD and each every next kilogramm costed only 12 USD. This price was valid for my region, it can be less or more expensive for other regions of Russia (use their calculator to check the price for your city or town). Currently Mainbox ships from USA to Russia only. I would like to emphasize that Mainbox charged exactly for 22.5 kg (not for 23 kg). Total cost was only $286 USD.

Shipito package forwarder would charge nearly the same for shipping this package to Russia via USPS Priority Mail Express International from its no sales tax location in Tualatin, Oregon. But the state postal service is slower as well as less reliable. Moreover Shipito would charge more if you consider fees for filling in your account, mailout, testing a computer, cost of incoming package(s), optional monthly or annual fees. This is yet another proof that Shipito is not a very good option for Russia anymore due to the fact that other package forwarders (parcel forwarders, freight forwarders, mail forwarders) offer lower fees as well as much better service at the same time. But for many other countries Shipito is still one of the best options available. If you know any better service for say Australia, Brazil please let me know in the comments.

On February 10th my package was at the customs of Russia. I was notified about this event by e-mail. On February 11th the customs clearance was complete and the package was in the warehouse in Russia. On February 13th a courier of the Garantpost courier service called me by the phone and delivered the package to my apartment within 2 hours.

The package had the "Fragile", "Handle with Care" stickers which were requested by me (and I didn't pay an extra cent for the service). Moreover the whole box was covered with black sticky tape, so the content had much lower risk of being damaged by humidity. Besides this tape allows you to notice whether the box was opened or not by the customs, courier service or a thief. Because of this fact alone I would consider using Mainbox for sending electronics or something of high value from USA to Russia.
What I didn't like about Mainbox:
  1. The courier that delivered the package to me didn't know whether I was allowed to open the package behind his own eyes or not. Although he did help me to open it and check the content visually.
  2. One needs to provide scans of his ID. Right now you either may use the state postal service or have to provide your ID.
  3. The web-site was not very fast when I was using it. The graphics on it is awesome, but I would prefer better speed.
  4. The web-site doesn't support SSL protocol, so the content is transferred between you and the web-site via a regular HTTP protocol which doesn't use any encryption.
  5. There are some delays with the statused of the package. The situation is far away from critical, but obviously some customers of courier services prefer this to be better.
What I did like about Mainbox:
  • Very fast delivery (only 2 weeks from ordering at Dell USA to appearing in my apartment in Rostov-on-Don, Russia)
  • No sales tax location available (optional service which was free in my case)
  • Courier delivery to your door
  • The company promises to cover any damage or loss of the package.
  • 45 days of free storage of your parcels in the USA (before repackaging)
  • Nice prices (but be carefull with the dimensional weight)
Bottom line: I can recommend Mainbox for sending purchases from USA to Russia!

How much it cost to ship a package to Russia from the USA via Shipito, Qwintry, Mainbox and Shopfans parcel forwarders (USPS vs. courier service) in 2014

I've been using Shipito parcel forwarder for shipping to Russia for more than 3 years. I posted detailed fees that I paid for shipping via USPS Priority Mail International and USPS Priority Mail Express International (former USPS Express Mail International) in 2010-2011, 2012 and 2013.

But the competition among parcel forwarders shipping to Russia is amazing. So no wonder that many companies offer much lower shipping rates and much better service at the same time when shipping to Russia. Unfortunately this is not the case for many other countries where using Shipito is still one of the best ways to get a decent service and cheap rates.

The first alternative I've decided to test was a new Russian parcel forwarder Mainbox. It offers fast courier service delivery to Russia. Besides speed it has lots of other benefits. One of them is that unlike Shipito you don't need to pay any monthly or annual fees to have an account with Mainbox. When shipping my Dell XPS all-in-one computer and Sony A7 mirrorless camera I decided to avoid state postal service by all means. Moreover I needed to test my computer and camera before shipping them to Russia. Mainbox tested Dell XPS, checked dead pixels on the  screen for only $3. The camera focusing and lack of scratches on the lense and display were also done only for $3! Standard Mainbox shipping is fast enough, so there is no need to use express shipping.

It costed me $289 to ship a 19kg 77x62x32cm package with my Dell XPS computer to Russia by Mainbox.

I also decided to test Qwintry parcel forwarder for shipping to Russia via USPS. It has a warehouse in the no sales tax location in Delaware, so I was wondering whether it will be faster and cheaper to send the package from the East coast (rather than the West coast in case of Shipito). Moreover Qwintry doesn't have any subscription fees, not does it charge for incoming packages as well as package consolidation.

Qwintry fee structure in 2014:
  • Shipping method: USPS Priority Mail Express International (EMS) Package Location: Newark, Delaware (no sales tax location)

When shipping my Yamaha digital piano, using state post was not and option due to size limitations of the USPS. Mainbox wasn't able to ship this package due to the large size. So I decided to test Shopfans Express courier service for shipping Yamaha P155 to Russia.

Shipito is opening new warehouse in Nevada for customers to avoid salestax

Shipito, a package forwarding company, is opening a new warehouse in Minden, Nevada. The shipping cost will be the same as in California warehouses. Nevada is a smaller state than California so there is better probability that sales tax will be not charged. Only sellers with physical presence in Nevada have to charge a sales tax.

Shipito: New warehouse in Nevada

Another benefit is a bigger mailbox. This is the biggest warehouse of Shipito, so it is offering 4 times the size of California mailbox. You can store 12 36"x17"x17" boxes in Nevada.

Also free package storage for virtual mailbox is up to 6 months instead of 90 days.

The new address will be available to clients with status (Diamond, Gold, Silver) first and immediately after that to all customers.

Review: Shipito complaints after 18 months of using it

I've been using Shipito for more than 18 months. I have consolidated 124 packages and sent 20 of them to Russia. Lots of experience not only to write praises, but also complaints.

What I don't like about Shipito

  • Changing service plans. Shipito has been introducing new service plans, changing current ones and removing them. This is very annoying.

  • Hidden Charges. Shipito does mention that they charge extra for heavy packages ($10 for over 30 pounds, $20 for over 70 pounds, $30 for over 100 pounds, $50 for over 150 pounds). The most interesting thing is that they charge extra $8.5 for consolidating large packages. And if you have consolidated your packages already and the consolidated package is ready to be mailed out, then they will charge $44 for consolidating this package with another one!!! They call it a double repacking fee.

If you don't request them to take pictures of the contents of the packages, they will charge 1% as an additional insurance. Does it really have to do anything with insurance? Absolutely not. Plus they charge 1% as a warehouse insurance, although it is not related to insurance as well.

And how about their Bank fee of 4.3%? They charge it even if you fill in your account using one of their partners.

But can you find all this information on the Shipito Services and Prices page? For whatever reason they don't mention all these hidden fees at all:

    Shipito Services and Prices
    Shipito Services and Prices

  • Blurry pictures. Many of the pictures of the packages they make are blurry. In many cases it is next to impossible to recognize the sender of the package. You can notify them that the label is unreadable and they will take another picture. But why can't they always take good pictures?

  • Significant delays every Chrismas and New Year. Some customers had to wait up to a week for the packages to be consolidated and sent.

  • Account validation. Shipito requires you to send 2 IDs to verify your account. Moreover you need to send a utility bill and a notarized FORM 1583 to fully verify your account. You can receive packages, but not letters without providing the notarized FORM 1583.

  • Limiting the size of the mailbox. Although my mailbox has bee 44% full at most, I don't really want to have any limits. The more packages their customers send, the more they earn, so I don't understand why posing any limits like that at all.

  • Not working on holidays.

  • No mobile apps, so you can easily manage your account from an iPhone, Android smartphone,... The web-site is not mobile device friendly at all.

  • No branded duct tape. It would allow to identify whether your package was opened or not.

  • Not perfect packaging by default for Russian post. Some russian mail forwarders know really well how russian post works, so they take additional steps to prevent damages of your goods. And you don't need to pay any additional fees for this service.

  • Poor customer service. I must admit that sometimes they do solve your problems. But sometimes communication with their customer service turns into endless discussion, when they don't even recognize their own mistakes.

  • No ideal shipping method for Russian Federation. While Shipito offers great rates to customers from different countries of the world, the situation with Russia is very different. DHL Express, UPS, Fedex and TNT are not a good option in most cases in Russia (due to the problems with customs, lower limits,....) Some russian mail forwarders offer shipping methods that are faster than the state post, avoid state post and are cheaper than the state post.

Is it that bad that I will switch to some other shipping forwarder? The fees are not bad. You can find the fees I have paid to Shipito and USPS when sending packages from USA to Russia here, here and here. And here is an example of fees paid to Shipito and AT Post for sending my parcel from Austria to Russia. Despite all the negativity mentioned above, it works good for me. And my Virtual Mailbox plan will end up in more than 6 months. If I see any better shipping forwarder after that, I will think about it.

How to make purchases on Amazon and other online stores and ship them to APO and FPO military addresses

Shipping a package to an APO (Army/Air Force Post Office - for U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force postal facilities) or FPO (Fleet Post Office - for U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard postal facilities) address is really no different than mailing a regular domestic package. The problem is that some eBay sellers and online stores do not ship to APO/FPO addresses either because of the package carrier they use, or due to software or business process limitations, or due to ignorance. This article covers some of the APO/FPO shipping restrictions, and how to overcome some of them.

Amazon APO/FPO address shipping restrictions

Amazon has the following APO/FPO address shipping restrictions:

Having trouble entering an APO, FPO, or DPO address on our order form? Following these steps should help:

  • City field: Enter "APO,"FPO," or "DPO."

  • State/Province/Region field: Enter the two-letter code for the region where the recipient is stationed. Typically, but not always, the code is "AE" for recipients stationed in Europe, Canada, Africa, or the Middle East; "AA" for recipients stationed in the Americas; and "AP" for recipients stationed in Asia or the Pacific.

  • Country field: Always select "United States" from the drop-down menu regardless of where the recipient is stationed.

Following these steps will ensure that you're charged the correct shipping amount and that your order will be delivered in a timely fashion. All shipments to APO, FPO, DPO addresses are sent via U.S. Priority or First Class Mail. We estimate 5 to 7 business days for delivery once the order has been shipped; however, some destinations may take up to 21 days.

Most items can be shipped to APO, FPO, and DPO addresses, except:

  • cell phones and service

  • computers

  • furniture

  • grocery items

  • outdoor living items

  • Target@Amazon.com items

Amazon shipping restrictions: APO, FPO addresses Additionally, some apparel, baby, camera and photo, electronics, health and personal care, housewares, jewelry, software, sports, and tools and hardware items cannot be shipped to APO, FPO, or DPO addresses. An error message will appear at checkout if you enter an APO, FPO, or DPO address and the item isn't eligible to be shipped to that address. Check the item's product detail page for eligibility.

The only way to get packages to an APO/FPO/DPO address is via the U.S. Postal Service. The package is delivered to the military post office by the USPS, and then shipped overseas through the military postal system. This means that ALL USPS size, weight and content restrictions must be adhered to in order for a package/parcel to be mailed out to an APO/FPO address. In general package can't exceed 70 pounds, be larger than 130 inches when you add the length (the longest side) and the girth, or contain prohibited items (flammables, air conditioners, etc.) You can always break the packages/parcels down into several smaller packages that fall under the weight and size limit. Note that each APO/FPO address has its own specific set of Zip Code Restrictions, these restrictions always supercedes the normal weight limit of 70 pounds and normal size limit of 130 inches (length + girth).

Overcoming geographical restrictions of APO/FPO address shipping restrictions

Some online stores and eBay sellers do not ship APO/FPO addresses. There are several reasons for that:

  • Some eBay sellers and online stores use United Parcel Services (UPS) or Federal Express (FedEx) to ship parcels/packages only, while only USPS can deliver purchases to APO/FPO addresses.

[caption id="attachment_922" align="alignnone" width="630" caption="eBay seller shipping methods: We only ship to the United States. Shipping is via UPS Ground. Please be aware that UPS can NOT ship to P.O. Boxes, APO or FPO addresses. We currently ship inside the United States only and do not offer shipping to international addresses."]eBay seller shipping methods: We only ship to the United States. can NOT ship to P.O. Boxes, APO or FPO addresses[/caption]

  • Some sellers just don't know an APO/FPO/DPO address is, or their website software does not allow the Military Mail States AA, AE and AP to be entered.

[caption id="attachment_919" align="alignnone" width="398" caption="eBay seller shipping methods: Shipping to: United States. Excludes: US Protectorates, APO/FPO"]eBay seller shipping methods: Shipping to United States only. Excludes: US Protectorates, APO/FPO[/caption]

If this is the case, you may

  • Contact the eBay seller or online store and ask to ship to your APO/FPO addresses.

  • Use a parcel/package forwarding service (freight forwarder) like Shipito. By now you know that a package/parcel forwarding service must be able to deliver by USPS (The United States Postal Service).

Note that some eBay sellers and online stores do not ship to package/parcel forwarding services:

[caption id="attachment_921" align="alignnone" width="630" caption="eBay seller shipping methods: only ships to addresses in the 50 United States and District of Columbia. does NOT shio to PO Boxes, APO/FPO, Freight Forwarders, Hotels or internationally"]eBay seller shipping methods: only ships to addresses in the 50 United States and District of Columbia[/caption]

Note for online sellers and stores about shipping to APO/FPO addresses

If you are an eBay, online seller, store, you can easily ship to APO/FPO addresses by USPS. This will increase your customer base and sales. And you will be offering a valuable service to those serving the United States of America.

What is package consolidation and can you save by consolidating packages when using Shipito?

Shipito Package Consolidation

Package consolidation is a process where packages are taken and put in one bigger box. When Shipito consolidates packages, they use a box you selected on consolidation page (usually USPS size limit 26"x13"x13").

Package/Parcel Consolidation: Bigger box vs. smaller box

A bigger box is available on Shipito (36"x17"x17"). But please note that the bigger box has limitations for choosing shipping methods (some countries have lower size limits for postal shipments). You will see if you can select your preferred shipping method on consolidation page.

Also note that big and heavy packages increase risk of damages during shipping. The 36"x17"x17" box is riskier to ship than the 26"x13"x13" box.

If you need bigger box, Shipito has offers a 37"x37"x26" box which is really big (you can use it for DHL, FedEx Freight or Shipsourcing container). You can also place a special request and Shipito will pack your packages on the pallet (might not be cheaper due to the weight and cost of the pallet).

Also note that some dimensional weight is used for some shipping methods, but Shipito employees usually try to use the smallest box possible.

If it is not possible to consolidate all packages/parcels into ONE box

Shipito tries to consolidate all packages in one box. If that is not possible they automatically use another box. You can also select to return extra packages back in your mailbox on the consolidation page.

Remove retail packaging vs. removing ALL packaging vs. keeping outside box

Another useful feature that Shipito offers is the Package removal.

For example retailer sends a pair of shoes packed in the nice retail/product box which is placed in bigger box for shipping. There are three options available:

  • Keep outside box (they will consolidate the box as received)

  • Keep retail packaging (outside box is thrown away, shoe box stays)

  • Remove all unnecessary packaging (shoe box is thrown away, only shoes are packed)
Shipito package consolidation page: Keep outside box, Keep retail packaging, Remove all unnecessary packaging Shipito package consolidation page: Keep outside box, Keep retail packaging, Remove all unnecessary packaging

If you are concerned about fragile items, you can place a Special request, so that Shipito can add extra packaging material. Or just keep fragile items in original boxes (for extra layer of protection).

Note that by removing all unnecessary packaging you can save on shipping a lot, since packages become smaller and lighter. But please note that if you will need to return an item, it will have to return it in retail packaging.

Can't I just order multiple items from a large online store like Amazon and avoid consolidation?

Amazon prices are usually good, but sometimes you may find the same stuff cheaper elsewhere. Besides the major problem is that even if you make a single order, there are several reasons why you may get it in multiple packages:

  • Amazon has a marketplace. Orders from many sellers of the marketplace are not fulfilled and shipped by Amazon itself.

  • Some items are shipped from different Amazon fulfillment centers.

  • Orders marked as gifts may arrive as several packages.

But this list doesn't seem to be complete. For example, I ordered 4 toys from Amazon last week. All these toys were fulfilled and shipped by Amazon. All 4 toys would fit into a 26x13x13 box. But Amazon has sent these toys in 3 packages, although they were sent from the same fulfillment center and all of them were shipped the same day.

Many other online retailers besides Amazon have sent me multiple packages instead of only one. But if you use Shipito, you can always upgrade your free service plan to Virtual Mailbox to enable package consolidation if you need it.

How to enable Shipito Package Consolidation

You will need VIRTUAL MAILBOX or NEW VIRTUAL MAILBOX service plan. Personally I use the VIRTUAL MAILBOX for $50/year. You can also use it for $10/month.

How to change / upgrade your "INDIVIDUAL PACKAGES" service plan to enable package consolidation:
  1. Login to your Shipito account.

  2. Click onto "Show / hide" beside "Your Shipito and Home Address"

  3. Click onto "change / upgrade" beside "Shipito ENG - INDIVIDUAL PACKAGES"

  4. Select VIRTUAL MAILBOX or NEW VIRTUAL MAILBOX
Change / upgrade Shipito Service Plan

Can you Save by Consolidating Packages?

I've been using Shipito Virtual Mailbox for 3 years. I used to pay $50 for the Virtual Mailbox plus $2 for every consolidated package. Now I pay $100 per year for the same Old Virtual Mailbox plan. I've consolidated 240+ packages into 29 (one of the packages and a magazine were sent without consolidation, one of the packages was returned to the seller, two packages were transfered from Oregon warehouse to Torrance). This allowed me to save $11'114.64 - $50*2 - $100*2 = $10'814.64 where $50*2 is the cost of the Virtual Mailbox for 2 years and $100*2 is the cost of the Old Virtual Mailbox for another 2 years.

Shipito package consolidation savings

One of the best savings for me were with jewerly items. The lowest shipping rate fee for me that comes with tracking costs about $41 (cheaper methods are also available, but I prefer to be able to track my packages), plus I pay $8.5 for mailing my package out. If I consolidate 2 jewerly items, I still pay $41 + $8.5, plus I pay $4 for 2 packages being consolidated. And if I consolidate jewerly packages with something bigger, I can save even more, because jewerly is small and weighs almost nothing.

Also I always remove shoe boxes during consolidation. It allows to save a lot, although I lose a chance to return items due to the lack of the retail packages.

It is interesting that sometimes you can save not only by consolidating, but also by just repacking. This happens even with online retailers like Amazon when they send some small item in a much bigger package.

Some samples on how much it costs to send packages/parcels to Russia using USPS and Shipito (2010-2011)

Shipito allows you to shop online in the USA and then ship your parcels/packages to international addresses. Shipito has one of the best shipping rates (compare with their competitors).

In this article I will show you some real examples how much shipping to Russia costs. You can notice that USPS Express Mail is slightly more expensive than USPS Priority Mail, but the former allows to deliver your parcels/packages much faster (usually 2-3 weeks instead of 2-3 months), plus your packages will be delivered to your door.
