Scam alert: Review of dishonest and illegit behavior of the founders of applian.com and zingtree.com

I've been a member of the affiliate program of Applian Technologies (applian.com), a company selling streaming media recording software, since about 2000. The tracking was done via Commission Junction affiliate network. Many Commission Junction advertisers have been rejecting my web-sites due to Russian language, my location or for various other reason. In fact many of them have been refusing my applications automatically without even considering my web-sites or traffic they generate. Even in 2000 there were plenty of people from Russia involved in various scams, money laundering and fraudulent credit cards, so it was very frustrating to try to legitimately make money from the legit traffic I was getting.

Luckily I found the affiliate program of Applian Technologies that accepted my application and was happy to pay me for legit traffic. It was OK at first and I was getting checks in USD that were successfully converted into cash via VTB and several other banks in Russia. Then I started having problems in the banks, because they wanted a contract that Commission Junction obviously didn't have. Then they also started asking to have the same name and address as in a passport, some kind invoice for every transaction and more. Although some things were easy to do, others like contracts were a real headache. It is so much easier to get an affiliate payment in the USA where nobody in a bank asks you anything about your checks, not to mention how easy it is to pay taxes from these payments.

So when Applian offered to pay me directly most of the commission while still tracking it via Commission Junction, I thought it was a good idea. I trusted the founders of applian.com (who are now the founders of zingtree.com as well). And I was getting my commission fully at first. I would send an invoice once in while (say once a year or once in 2 years), get all the papers for the bank and receive my wire transfer.

Then I sold my web-sites all-streaming-media.com and stream-recorder.com for only 50% of the yearly profit they were generating (I know this price offered by Applian was far from fair, but it was me who agreed, so I don't blame anybody for that). I started getting less affiliate commission via emoney.al.ru, but this still allowed me to make several thousand dollars since 2011 to 2017. The problem is that I didn't request payment, because of the problems with banks in Russia. I wanted to have a larger amount to be transferred, so that I don't have to provide papers and notarized translations to the bank and the Federal Tax Service of Russia for every little transfer (obviously it is much easier to do it in batches). Since I trusted the owners of Applian Technlogies, I didn't expect anything bad to happen. It appeared that I was so wrong.

When Applian closed its affiliate program at Commission Junction in 2017, I didn't get any notification. When I found this out it was alarming. I wrote to the founders and asked to send me a wire transfer. I didn't get any replies by e-mail, so I found out how to contact them via Skype. It appeared that they just didn't want to pay. They offered me to forget about all my affiliate commission for the past 6 years. They said I couldn't send an invoice after 6 years, that the situation in the company changed drastically.

But obviously it doesn't have to do anything with the term, because they didn't even pay for 2016 although I was requesting payment in 2017. Moreover my affiliate commission is not very large considering the sales Applian was generating in the past. So an honest person would just pay from his own pocket, even if it is done partially (by the mutual agreement) and via an installment plan. But this is not the case here. I didn't get a penny from Applian Technologies for all my work from 2012 to 2017.

Moreover since they refused to pay completely, I offered them to get all-streaming-media.com and stream-recorder.com domains instead of the affiliate commission, these web-sites seems to be dead for Applian anyway. If you try to enter All-streaming-media.com, you get the message "Deceptive site ahead". I warned the company about it about 6 month ago, but nothing has changed since then.

all-streaming-media.com (belonging to Applian): Deceptive site ahead

stream-recorder.com message board has some kind of technical issues. So basically it is dead for more than a month.

It is so frustrating to see deceptive content as well as the dead message board on the web-sites that I spent so much blood and tears onto. Although I don't want to be involved into streaming media recording anymore, I would rather resurrect the projects so that they continue helping people.

In the end I warned Bill Dettering and Tom Mayes that I would write about their dishonest behavior, so that everybody knows they can't be trusted. I also warned them that my experience shows that bad online reputation will cause them to lose several times more money then they refuse to pay. But this didn't even allowed me to get the dead domains.

I should have paid much more attention to the facts of bundling nasty adware or spyware with their free software. This was a clear sign that these people can not be trusted.

I highly recommend not to use any products or services from Applian or Zingtree. These people just can't be trusted after the rip off and bundling software with spyware/malware.

This is a huge amount of money for me these days. But sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. And although the law doesn't protect us from many scams, illegit and dishonest behavior, the laws of Karma are unavoidable. So if you do any evil, sooner or later you will face it from the other side. And I don't need to do anything for that to happen. The Universal Mind will take care of it by itself.

p.s. One of the software companies has sent me a wire transfer with the affiliate commission for the past 4 years recently. So despite what Bill Dettering claimed, this is only about honesty.

Groupon and the worst customer support ever

I've been a loyal customer of Ideel for 5 years. We've made dozens of purchases there. But when Groupon has bought Ideel we've started spending less time on its web-site. Still it was not that bad.

Everything has changed after Ideel moving to the Groupon web-site. After reading about this news I found out that I could get my promotional credits refunded. On January 13, 2015 I contacted Ideel support via ideel@groupon.com. Several days later I got a reply that they apologize for the delay and will refund the amount to my debit card.

The money supposed to appear in 3-5 business days. A month later I still can't get the refund. And the problem is that Groupon support is the worst one I have ever contacted. They don't try to solve your problem at all. And they don't even try to read your quoted message.

Several replies had messages saying I had no credits at all or my credits have expired. And this is despite of the fact that the $50 refund was approved before. No to mention that I got yet another $25 promotional credit after January 13th. When I told support about it, they replied several times that they can't find any orders associated with my e-mail. When I sent them my e-mail they asked me about the problem I had or asked me to provide the order number, despite the fact that everything was quoted in the e-mail.

In my last message I wrote everything about the problem once again mentioning my e-mail at Ideel. Nevertheless the support wrote "I'm unable to find any orders under" my e-mail address. They go in circles without even trying to read the question. It seems like Groupon support needs lots of support, because from my experience it is totally useless.

Will I recommend Groupon or buy from them again? Hell no.

Review of Mainbox - US to Russia package forwarder (parcel forwarder, mail forwarder, freight forwarder)

I have bought Dell XPS 2720 all-in-one computer at Dell Outlet USA. I used a 20% coupon code, although it is 87 dollars cheaper with the 25% $GDBTQH7WC6FMV right now . But I had not time to wait for a better deal. And I didn't expect any deals similar to Black Friday ones when a refurbished DELL XPS 2720 costed only 1'000 USD at Woot, which is 200 USD less than you can get from Dell outlet now using the 25% coupon code.

I wanted my computer to be delivered safe and fast, so I was not planning to use the state postal services (USPS and Russian Post). I have decided to test a pretty new package forwarder (parcel forwarder, freight forwarder, mail forwarder) - Mainbox International Inc. I chose Standard delivery instead of Express, because it is much cheaper, but still very fast (sometimes even faster than the Express shipping by Mainbox).

I've made my order at Dell Outlet on January 30th, 2014.

Fedex has delivered my package to the no sales tax location in Bear, Delaware on February 4th, 2014.

I've chosen the no sales tax warehouse of Mainbox, because it only costs $2 dollars more, but allows not to pay the sales tax at all! The saving of several dozens of dollars was decisive for me. With the sales tax there was a chance I could exceed the 1000 EUR limit. And I didn't want to pay any additional customs fees or taxes in Russia. Nor have I considered an opportunity to lower the price in the customs declaration. It is an ethical decision for me, not the risk of losing the insurance in case of any problem.

On February 5rh, 2014 I requested Mainbox to test my computer. I also added in the comments that I wanted them to check whether the IPS panel has any dead pixels or not. This test costed me only 3 USD. The refurbished computer was tested to work and the screen didn't have any dead pixels.

Then I sent my purchase to packaging. My newly purchased computer was packed and the box was measured. This was the time I knew my final cost of sending my package from the USA to Russia by Mainbox Standard delivery.

On February 6, 2014 I paid for all the services of Mainbox as well as for the courier shipping by Paypal. I could have saved 10% by using a debit or credit card of the Avangard bank. As for Paypal, it costed me 0% to fill in the account. The same applies to debit and credit cards, there are no any hidden fees at Mainbox!

The size of the package was 77x62x32cm and its weight was 19.12 kg . Dimensional weight was 22.5 kg. The first kg costed me 28 USD and each every next kilogramm costed only 12 USD. This price was valid for my region, it can be less or more expensive for other regions of Russia (use their calculator to check the price for your city or town). Currently Mainbox ships from USA to Russia only. I would like to emphasize that Mainbox charged exactly for 22.5 kg (not for 23 kg). Total cost was only $286 USD.

Shipito package forwarder would charge nearly the same for shipping this package to Russia via USPS Priority Mail Express International from its no sales tax location in Tualatin, Oregon. But the state postal service is slower as well as less reliable. Moreover Shipito would charge more if you consider fees for filling in your account, mailout, testing a computer, cost of incoming package(s), optional monthly or annual fees. This is yet another proof that Shipito is not a very good option for Russia anymore due to the fact that other package forwarders (parcel forwarders, freight forwarders, mail forwarders) offer lower fees as well as much better service at the same time. But for many other countries Shipito is still one of the best options available. If you know any better service for say Australia, Brazil please let me know in the comments.

On February 10th my package was at the customs of Russia. I was notified about this event by e-mail. On February 11th the customs clearance was complete and the package was in the warehouse in Russia. On February 13th a courier of the Garantpost courier service called me by the phone and delivered the package to my apartment within 2 hours.

The package had the "Fragile", "Handle with Care" stickers which were requested by me (and I didn't pay an extra cent for the service). Moreover the whole box was covered with black sticky tape, so the content had much lower risk of being damaged by humidity. Besides this tape allows you to notice whether the box was opened or not by the customs, courier service or a thief. Because of this fact alone I would consider using Mainbox for sending electronics or something of high value from USA to Russia.
What I didn't like about Mainbox:
  1. The courier that delivered the package to me didn't know whether I was allowed to open the package behind his own eyes or not. Although he did help me to open it and check the content visually.
  2. One needs to provide scans of his ID. Right now you either may use the state postal service or have to provide your ID.
  3. The web-site was not very fast when I was using it. The graphics on it is awesome, but I would prefer better speed.
  4. The web-site doesn't support SSL protocol, so the content is transferred between you and the web-site via a regular HTTP protocol which doesn't use any encryption.
  5. There are some delays with the statused of the package. The situation is far away from critical, but obviously some customers of courier services prefer this to be better.
What I did like about Mainbox:
  • Very fast delivery (only 2 weeks from ordering at Dell USA to appearing in my apartment in Rostov-on-Don, Russia)
  • No sales tax location available (optional service which was free in my case)
  • Courier delivery to your door
  • The company promises to cover any damage or loss of the package.
  • 45 days of free storage of your parcels in the USA (before repackaging)
  • Nice prices (but be carefull with the dimensional weight)
Bottom line: I can recommend Mainbox for sending purchases from USA to Russia!

How much it cost to ship a package to Russia from the USA via Shipito, Qwintry, Mainbox and Shopfans parcel forwarders (USPS vs. courier service) in 2014

I've been using Shipito parcel forwarder for shipping to Russia for more than 3 years. I posted detailed fees that I paid for shipping via USPS Priority Mail International and USPS Priority Mail Express International (former USPS Express Mail International) in 2010-2011, 2012 and 2013.

But the competition among parcel forwarders shipping to Russia is amazing. So no wonder that many companies offer much lower shipping rates and much better service at the same time when shipping to Russia. Unfortunately this is not the case for many other countries where using Shipito is still one of the best ways to get a decent service and cheap rates.

The first alternative I've decided to test was a new Russian parcel forwarder Mainbox. It offers fast courier service delivery to Russia. Besides speed it has lots of other benefits. One of them is that unlike Shipito you don't need to pay any monthly or annual fees to have an account with Mainbox. When shipping my Dell XPS all-in-one computer and Sony A7 mirrorless camera I decided to avoid state postal service by all means. Moreover I needed to test my computer and camera before shipping them to Russia. Mainbox tested Dell XPS, checked dead pixels on the  screen for only $3. The camera focusing and lack of scratches on the lense and display were also done only for $3! Standard Mainbox shipping is fast enough, so there is no need to use express shipping.

It costed me $289 to ship a 19kg 77x62x32cm package with my Dell XPS computer to Russia by Mainbox.

I also decided to test Qwintry parcel forwarder for shipping to Russia via USPS. It has a warehouse in the no sales tax location in Delaware, so I was wondering whether it will be faster and cheaper to send the package from the East coast (rather than the West coast in case of Shipito). Moreover Qwintry doesn't have any subscription fees, not does it charge for incoming packages as well as package consolidation.

When shipping my Yamaha digital piano, using state post was not and option due to size limitations of the USPS. Mainbox wasn't able to ship this package due to the large size. So I decided to test Shopfans Express courier service for shipping Yamaha P155 to Russia.

Always compare prices when purchasing from private shopping clubs (sample sale sites, flash sale sites)

While I love private shopping clubs and we buy most of our clothing, shoes and accessories there, it is always a good idea to compare prices at least with Amazon. Besides price comparison Amazon has plenty of reviews which help a lot to make an educated purchase.

Zulily private shopping club offers Magformers building sets today. Amazon has very good reviews of these products. We own the Magformers Magnetic Building Construction Set - 62 Piece Designer Set and we do love it. Moreover I wanted to buy a bigger set.

See the video showing how it works and I'm sure you will be amazed:

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJtBUcCO_NM&w=420&h=315]

The good thing about Zulily is that you can get notifications about your favorite brands by hitting the "Add to my favorites" links. I did that for Magformers. But unfortunately I wasn't impressed by the prices on this sale. The prices are identical or even lower on Amazon. The best example is the Magformers 112 Challenger Set.

Price on Amazon - $123.22

Magformers 112 Challenger Set at Amazon

Price on Zulily - $139.99

Magfomers_Challenger 112 Piece Magnetic Set at Zulily

Moreover Amazon will ship much faster and offers free shipping when spending $25 and more (some exceptions apply when buying from Amazon sellers and not Amazon itself).

Despite the fact that I like Zulily, I always compare prices. I skip this when buying clothing and shoes most of the time, but mostly when I see the brands that I know well. In many other cases I compare prices and read reviews, and I highly recommend you to do the same.

Is Ausfis.org a scam, fraud or a legitimate service?

I and two of my friends who participated in the DV lottery got e-mails from scammers offering to transfer 800 USD per person to get green card. We old used USAFIS web-site without paying for their service. And last week I got the following e-mail about immigration to Australia:

Australia is facing a worker shortage and is looking for new immigrants. As a valued USAFIS customer, we wish to make your dream of a better future for you and your family a reality. We have joined forces with AUSFIS to see if you have the job skills to legally live and work in Australia. Finding out if you can immigrate to Australia is based upon your profession, education, age and English level. No lotteries determining your future just your skills.

If you are under the age of 49, experienced in your profession and have a reasonable level of English, let AUSFIS check if you can have a new life in Australia. Register Now to the Australian Skilled Migration Program: www.ausfis.org

AUSFIS.org: SCAM, FRAUD or LEGIT?

This is a scam and fraud as reported many users (search for "ausfis.org scam", "ausfis.org fraud", "ausfis.org legit", "ausfis.org complaint", "ausfis.org review" to find out more). The AUSFIS web-site doesn't give any reference to Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) website registration which is a requirement by law for all Migration Agents operating in Australia.

If you want to apply for an Australian visa, you should either apply directly via the official Australian government immigration website www.immi.gov.au/immigration/ or use a service of a MARA registered migration agent (www.mara.gov.au). Do not trust any other organisation offering immigration services to Australia and do not give them your credit card number over the phone!

Review: Shipito complaints after 18 months of using it

I've been using Shipito for more than 18 months. I have consolidated 124 packages and sent 20 of them to Russia. Lots of experience not only to write praises, but also complaints.

What I don't like about Shipito

  • Changing service plans. Shipito has been introducing new service plans, changing current ones and removing them. This is very annoying.

  • Hidden Charges. Shipito does mention that they charge extra for heavy packages ($10 for over 30 pounds, $20 for over 70 pounds, $30 for over 100 pounds, $50 for over 150 pounds). The most interesting thing is that they charge extra $8.5 for consolidating large packages. And if you have consolidated your packages already and the consolidated package is ready to be mailed out, then they will charge $44 for consolidating this package with another one!!! They call it a double repacking fee.

If you don't request them to take pictures of the contents of the packages, they will charge 1% as an additional insurance. Does it really have to do anything with insurance? Absolutely not. Plus they charge 1% as a warehouse insurance, although it is not related to insurance as well.

And how about their Bank fee of 4.3%? They charge it even if you fill in your account using one of their partners.

But can you find all this information on the Shipito Services and Prices page? For whatever reason they don't mention all these hidden fees at all:

    Shipito Services and Prices
    Shipito Services and Prices

  • Blurry pictures. Many of the pictures of the packages they make are blurry. In many cases it is next to impossible to recognize the sender of the package. You can notify them that the label is unreadable and they will take another picture. But why can't they always take good pictures?

  • Significant delays every Chrismas and New Year. Some customers had to wait up to a week for the packages to be consolidated and sent.

  • Account validation. Shipito requires you to send 2 IDs to verify your account. Moreover you need to send a utility bill and a notarized FORM 1583 to fully verify your account. You can receive packages, but not letters without providing the notarized FORM 1583.

  • Limiting the size of the mailbox. Although my mailbox has bee 44% full at most, I don't really want to have any limits. The more packages their customers send, the more they earn, so I don't understand why posing any limits like that at all.

  • Not working on holidays.

  • No mobile apps, so you can easily manage your account from an iPhone, Android smartphone,... The web-site is not mobile device friendly at all.

  • No branded duct tape. It would allow to identify whether your package was opened or not.

  • Not perfect packaging by default for Russian post. Some russian mail forwarders know really well how russian post works, so they take additional steps to prevent damages of your goods. And you don't need to pay any additional fees for this service.

  • Poor customer service. I must admit that sometimes they do solve your problems. But sometimes communication with their customer service turns into endless discussion, when they don't even recognize their own mistakes.

  • No ideal shipping method for Russian Federation. While Shipito offers great rates to customers from different countries of the world, the situation with Russia is very different. DHL Express, UPS, Fedex and TNT are not a good option in most cases in Russia (due to the problems with customs, lower limits,....) Some russian mail forwarders offer shipping methods that are faster than the state post, avoid state post and are cheaper than the state post.

Is it that bad that I will switch to some other shipping forwarder? The fees are not bad. You can find the fees I have paid to Shipito and USPS when sending packages from USA to Russia here, here and here. And here is an example of fees paid to Shipito and AT Post for sending my parcel from Austria to Russia. Despite all the negativity mentioned above, it works good for me. And my Virtual Mailbox plan will end up in more than 6 months. If I see any better shipping forwarder after that, I will think about it.

DiamondShark discount jewerly review: Saved $1,558.00 off MSRP on jewerly since 10/28/2010

I've been a happy customer of DiamondShark (www.DiamondShark.com or www.SharkStores.com/Jewelry). I had one problem with them, but their customer support was so quick and helpful, that can't even express how much I love this discount jewerly shop.

The only problem is that DiamondShark (SharkStores) has never showed MSRP prices on jewerly items, so I didn't really know whether I was getting any discount or not. But today I got a letter from them saying that I have saved $1,558.00 off MSRP since 10/28/2010!!! I didn't know that all jewerly items I bought were sold at a discount of at least 80%:

[caption id="attachment_913" align="alignnone" width="607" caption="DiamondShark (SharkStores) discount jewerly: Saved a total of $1,558.00 off MSR since 10/28/2010"]DiamondShark (SharkStores) discount jewerly: Saved a total of $1,558.00 off MSR since 10/28/2010[/caption]

Note that I was buying jewerly items on DiamondShark (SharkStores) from outside the USA.

Fedex vs. USPS: Fedex is about service and USPS is about lost anddamaged packages?

My post about Comparison of Shipito and BundleBox had an immediate reaction from Nicola M.:
If you are a user that is likely to ship expensive pieces of apparel, shoes, hightech, gear/equipment - you might want to try BundleBox.

USPS is NOT comparable to FedEx. FedEx is the most cost-efficient. It provides a much better service than USPS. USPS is a lot cheaper but there are a lot of issues with packages being lost, broken, etc - Not to mention the fact that USPS offer a very poor customer service, compared to FedEx.

The level of service is key to explaining the different shipping rates.
...
If I may object to the way you conducted your comparison, I am not sure you are comparing apples with apples.

I do recognize that I wasn't able to compare shipping rates of Fedex when sending via BundleBox and Shipito. The reason for that is that the Shipito calculator didn't show me any rates for Fedex.

Another reason for me not to use Fedex is because they don't seem to have a customs broker in Russia at all (!). So unless I want to risk my package to be returned, there is no reason to use it (Note that you will need to pay the return fee in case of return). One can try to send the following package to Russia:

  1. Declared value up to 200 EUR

  2. Weight up to 20 Kg.

  3. Up to five identical pieces in one parcel. (Can be 5 pieces of "A" and 4 pieces of "B" = 9, but not 6 pieces of "A")

But even Nicola has mentioned that Fedex is for expensive pieces of apparel, shoes, hightech, gear/equipment, so Fedex is clearly not an option for Russia. Now let's leave Russia alone.

As for Fedex in general, Shipito offers "huge discounts negotiated" on behalf of their customers. And it has a warehouses in Portland, Oregon. Any purchase shipped to Oregon is not charged sales tax.

Is Fedex about service and USPS about lost and damaged packages?

I must admit that USPS is not ideal. But none of my packages arrived damaged and none of them were lost. I really had some problems with the Russian post, and I couldn't get any reply about package I filed a claim about for more than a month. But this has nothing to do with USPS.

During the last 3+ years I received 240+ packages that were sent mainly by USPS and UPS to my Shipito mailbox. And I sent all my consolidated packages to Russia via USPS Priority Mail and USPS Express Mail. Plus I got more than 30 packages from US sellers, who sent them to me directly via USPS and UPS. Nothing was damaged or lost (not my HP Envy laptop, not my Panasonic TM700 Camcorder, not 3 my Kindle book readers, not my pretty expensive clothing from private shopping clubs like Ideeli.

Shipito: 244 packages received, 34 packages sent

I didn't have any problem with Fedex as well. But I was really disappointed when they left a couple of my packages at the entrance of an apartment house in San Francisco. They didn't even try to call me. This was the time I decided to avoid them, since I didn't see any reason to pay higher fees for such a service.

Even if you don't like USPS, you can try to use UPS instead. There might be more risk to use USPS instead of UPS, Fedex or DHL, and the USPS service might be worse than what alternative companies offer, but at least your USPS packages can be insured and have tracking numbers.

Share your experience with USPS, UPS, Fedex, DHL,...

Do you have a different experience with USPS, UPS, Fedex, DHL? Do you use any alternative services like Shipito Air Mail? Please share your thoughts.

Some samples on how much it costs to send packages/parcels to Russia using USPS and Shipito (2010-2011)

Shipito allows you to shop online in the USA and then ship your parcels/packages to international addresses. Shipito has one of the best shipping rates (compare with their competitors).

In this article I will show you some real examples how much shipping to Russia costs. You can notice that USPS Express Mail is slightly more expensive than USPS Priority Mail, but the former allows to deliver your parcels/packages much faster (usually 2-3 weeks instead of 2-3 months), plus your packages will be delivered to your door.
